"Dinner is served!" Harriet's mother said as she came into the room. Harriet followed closely behind. Both were holding plates of food. Violet sat down in her chair, still holding the salt in her hand. Her hand was getting quite sweaty. Harriet came over to Violet with the plate in her hands.
"Why are you holding the salt in your hands?" Harriet asked, raising an eyebrow. "By the way, I got your sausages and potato." She placed the plate on the placemat in front of Violet.
"Conor asked me to get the salt," Violet said, placing the salt next to the pepper. "And thanks."
"Oh, ok," Harriet said as she sat down. She placed a napkin on her lap. Woah, do these people eat posh or something? Violet thought.
"Violet and Conor, don't forget to place a napkin on your lap," Harriet said, grabbing two napkins from a plastic box. She gave one to Violet.
"Thanks, but I don't eat with a napkin on my lap," Violet said, awkwardly holding the napkin in mid-air.
"Oh, don't you? I thought everyone does. My friend Kylie eats with a napkin on her lap," Harriet said. "Though you'll have to eat like that because Mum says it's house rules." "That's right," Harriet's mother said as she looked at Violet with a creepy smile.
"Is Kylie from Rhyfields?" Violet asked, picking up her knife and fork.
"Yes, she is," Harriet said as she tucked herself into the table. Interesting, Violet thought. Maybe spirits eat with napkins on their laps?




Everyone had finished dinner by now, and they were all full. It was time for Violet to go back to her house.
"Honey, I'm afraid you can't come. You still have your assignment to do, remember?" Harriet's mother said from the kitchen.
"Oh, right, yeah," Harriet said as she peeked her head into the kitchen. Violet was waiting at the door, eager to go home.
"I also am busy with all the washing of plates and clothes, so Conor, could you please walk with Violet?" Harriet's mother added.
"Ok," Conor said, putting his shoes on. "Er, let's go?" He said as he looked at Violet.
"Okay then," Violet said as she opened the door.
"Bye! Thanks for coming!" Harriet said, waving with a smile.
"Bye!" Violet said, waving back.
The door closed.
