⊱10) Turn my back and slam the door
And here I stand and here I'll stay
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway ⊰
After the ‘ritual’, everyone settled in for brunch. People hugged and touched each others cheeks with their own. So this was what family a reunion looked like. Amazing! But it was totally boring for Hera. Hera had greeted everyone while I stood beside her. I was introduced to people who I couldn’t remember, but there was the occasional Uncle Joe and Aunt Mary. But the weirdest relative award had to go to Nana. She had been in an accident decades ago and anterograde amnesia and her life was the only thing she got from the injury. And she was also the oldest member of the family. Anyway, being old isn’t the weird part. It’s the amnesia thing.
‘Anterograde amnesia is a loss of the ability to create new memories after the event that caused the amnesia, leading to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long-term memories from before the event remain intact,’ according to wikipedia.
In normal people talk, it means, she doesn’t remember anything after the accident, but she clearly remembers the things before the accident. Therefore whenever someone meets her, all she does is smile and hug. Because she has no idea what’s going on around her. Poor lady. Anyway, when I came close to hug her, she hugged me back with more fervor than she received the other guests. She kept screaming “JUNE! JUNE!” I mean what did that even mean? Hera and the rest of the family pulled me back.
And that was the excellent morning welcome I received. Just Excellent!
“So I know you have a pretty bad picture of my family.” Hera said, whilst swishing her coffee in her mug.
It was evening and we were inside her room. I learnt that only Nana’s, Joshua’s and Hera’s family lived in the main house. All the others lived in the hotels nearby. It seems like they couldn’t stand the smell of the old house. I didn’t find the house at all smelly, rather quite exquisite and beautiful. The window showed us the darkness merging with the red sky. The sun has just gone below the horizon. Night fall.
“No, never. Your family is everything I imagined, including all the drama.” I said with my own coffee in hand.
“I thought you would like us.” Hera smiled.
“So I’m guessing we’re sharing this room?”
“You guessed correctly. I asked my mom if we could share this room, and she agreed. Now we can discuss our mystery. ”
“I hope your mom doesn’t think that I’m scared to be in my own room.”
Hera said nothing.

To say the least, I understood nothing what we discussed about last night. Absolutely nothing. And Hera and I slept pretty late. Though I might have been the first one to doze off. The last thing I remember was that she was telling me the first place to search for clues. Yeah right!
Ranting was the first thing on my mind today morning. Ranting to someone, some how! I had to get it off. I mean it’s not enough that I slept at 2 am, but waking up at 6:30! That too by the sound of the rooster. I mean, that’s just preposterous. Tennessee was beautiful but the huge bags under my eyes weighed the whole scenery down, down to the point where everything was a blur. Coffee. I was really hoping for a good cup of Joe in the kitchen, but all I got was milk and stale bread. It seemed like the whole household had woken up at dawn to start working on the farm.
And if that wasn’t enough, Hera seemed perfectly fine today morning. All ready to fetch eggs for us. Seems like that will be the only hot thing that we get for breakfast. Great. I’m not much of a morning person. But mostly I what pis.sed me off was searching if Joshua was anywhere about to see me in this state of vulnerability. I mean, even Nana didn’t scare me as much as him. After getting all prepped for a horrible day of clue-finding-mystery-solving drag, I saw an uplifting sight. Hera was conversing with a farm girl. She was elder of course. And pretty tall and looked strong enough to handle … umm, handle…. STUFF. See, even my thought process is a mess.
So what was I thinking again? Oh right! Finally someone normal to talk to, considering that Hera isn’t anywhere near normal. I wonder if we can let her in to our secret.
“Hey Ariel, come faster, Gale is going to help us find the best possible hiding places and most clue worthy areas.” Hera shouted.
I guess we can.
“Hey Gale. How you doing?”
No answer.
“Oh, uh, Gale doesn’t speak English.” Hera interrupted.
“Oh, so what does she speak?”
“Umm, nothing. But she’s the only one who can understand - and has the patience to listen to - what Nana is saying. That’s why she’s hired to stay here with us. What she can’t say, her brain makes up for it.”
I was welling with pity for the girl. But at least she was smart. She didn’t have many girly features; rather I would bet she would make a really handsome boy. She had such beautiful jaws, and she had a huge Adam's apple. Sortev like Joshua's. Ewww, what am I saying?
“So how does she communicate?” Even though I’ve directed the question to Hera, I was smiling at Gale.

“Cool. So where do we go now?”

Yeah, well, I didn’t get my chance because the same Joshua shouted, “Oh my gosh!” and face-palmed himself.

Though it looked like any other ordinary box, made of wooden planks, there was something extraordinary about what Joshua saw that I didn’t.
“What is it?” Hera asked, while we saw Joshua frantically pulling out all the hay from the crate.
“It’s a diary. The diary of June.”

I ran over his shoulder with disbelief. That was our first and probably our most valuable clue! He op.ened the book holding his breath. A beautiful curly handwriting was in the first blank page of the diary.
Joshua turned the pages super delicately hoping that the yellowed pages wouldn't crumble. Luckily only the sides had been worn out. Then after all the page turning and the heart wrenching tension had passed, Joshua cleared his throat. I realized it was my turn to leave slowly yet steadily and hope that he didn't notice how close I was standing next to him. And then, my red blush that had spread across my cheeks.
"Joshua how did you know the diary was inside the crate?" Gale sign languaged away and Hera gave it a voice.
He tapped the metal tip of the diary belt lock. "It reflected the light. It was hard not to notice." He said, while still searching the book for clues. When he finally looked up, his beautiful hazel eyes shone more than the lock of the diary. If only he would hold me tightly just like that book in his hands...
What the!! What Am I THINKING!!! I slapped myself across the face and brought myself back to reality. Hera didn't take it weirdly at all. She knew I had problems. And Gail didn't seem to notice. "Lets take the book back to house.", Hera decided and we followed. The study room was quiet and it was the perfect place for us to extract something from the figurative Bible. Gale was the first person who we gave the book to. Considering she was the most intelligent. The intelligence range goes from Gale -> Hera -> Joshua -> Me. We normal people obviously couldn't possibly read a 400 paged Biography in a day, much less in an hour. But Gale's brain did it. "Speed reading." Hera said.
Again, Hera must have known the many talents of Gale's brain.
To tell us she was done, Gale motioned her palms inwards and then outwards i.e. towards us.
"That means-" Hera began.
"Yeah, we know!" Joshua and I said together. Then we looked at each other and shut up.
Gale sign languaged again.
"She says, only the last chapter seems out of place." Hera said.
"Why?" Josh and I look at Gale.
"Because, it's a code."

Gale did a couple more hand motions and then Hera took out a pencil and paper and started jotting down random words horizontally. “Hera what are you-” I spoke. And Joshua did the most hurtful and the most provocative thing he’s ever done to me! HE SHUSHED ME!! HOW DARE HE!!
But I could do nothing but form tears in my eyes and run away. From the back of eyes, I knew Joshua would be regretting what he did. I slammed my bedroom door and slumped down with my back on the door and cried. I just knew Hera would say to ‘go get me’ to Joshua and he would come in 3…2…1…
A knock. “Ariel. Sweet heart, I’m sorry I shushed at you.” I must be madly in love with him because I forgave him the second he uttered the words ‘sweetheart’.
“But you hate me. Admit it.”, I said in my cracked voice.
“No I don’t hate you.”, came the immediate reply.
“The why’d you break up with me?” I hiccupped.
Pause.
“Ummm, all in good time Ariel.”
“But I want to know so badly.”, I started crying again.
Pause. You could hear me cry like a choking cow.
“Let’s just say I don’t hate you as much as I did when you left me for other guys.”, It was his turn to play back.
Pause. I had to think this one out... I cannot tell him the real reason...I cannot tell him the real reason...
“Only because you made my worst fears come true. Breaking up with me has left my heart with a soul.”
Dammit! I told him! But silence is all I got in return. I got no reply. But if I knew the real Joshua, and I do, he would be grinning right now. That stopped the tears and made me giggle too. He does care.
“Darling, can we go back now. I’m sure Hera and Gale are done.”
It was time to go. If only I could hold his hand......
“Give me a minute.”, I said with a sigh.
And so we left to the study. Hera said, “Hey stupid, we’ve finished the code. Come’ ere.” She motioned.
She put her hand around me, it’s her way of saying ‘everything’s alright now’.
“Have you heard of the Equidistant Letter Sequence method Ariel?” she began explaining. I shook my head with disagreement. Whilst shooting daggers at Joshua, she asked him the same question. He too didn’t know.
Hera took out her mobile and used her mobile data for getting the information from wikipedia. Of course there would be no network in the country side. Even the telephone wasn’t cordless.
“According to Wiki,

“Gale was so helpful. Thank you Gale.” Joshua shook hands with her. There was a twinge of jealousy in me but that didn’t make me want to hurl myself at Gale. She was sweet enough to help, wasn’t she?

I asked Hera to read the message aloud. And she did.

3) MY DAUGHTER. ”

Ugh! Horse poo on my shoes. But I was glad I was wearing my oldest pair of sneakers. To the dust bin you go. "I'm sorry Joshua.", I managed to say, though I wasn't sorry at all. Rather happy actually.
"It's alright. You okay?", He said while helping me stand straight.
"Yup. Can't say the same for my sneakers though. It's alright. We better catch up with them...", I started walking. But unfortunately my footing wasn't all that good. Wait... scratch that- Fortunately my footing wasn't all that good. I fell on him again.
"Looks like I'll have to be near you from now on... that is... just to make sure you don't fall Ariel." He said unsure.
KISS ME. KISS ME NOW!! - is what my heart screamed.
But I just giggled and I let him hold my arm till we reached Hera and Gale.
Hera didn't turn back, but I knew she was smiling. "So where d'you two go?" she said coyly.
"Ariel fell." Joshua said and left my arm.
NOOOO, DON'T LET ME GO......Thanks a lot Hera. (sarcasm if you didn't get it.)
"So we found something. More like Gale found something.", She turned.
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's a heart shaped key. We found it on the horse - Kyra. Seems like it was June's pet. It was around the horse's neck - a pendant." Hera informed us.
"I'm just surprised the horse is alive.", I murmured... cause I have this huge phobia of horses. "Can we get outta here?"
Gale motioned to Hera.
And her reply was,"Yes she's a wuss towards horses."
Joshua grinned.
"Great.", I said. And so we left to the next clue. The vineyard. Time to get drunk.

The problem with the second clue had two parts.
1 - Where is the vineyard?
2- What did she mean by 'VINEYARD: 112'?
Well, the solution to the first one was the try and error method. Whereas the second one, we all agreed, to cross that bridge when we find it. If that is the phrase. Umm, so I kept wondering what the heart shaped key would open?
So we went hunting for anything that looked like an underground cellar. Where else would they keep the vine? And Hera informed us that the vineyard was reduced to nothing during the flood. Maybe we would never find the next clue. Probably everything would be rotting underground. My pessimistic side rose up to surface. There's no hope for survival for anything now... Whoops!
I slipped on a thick rope that was attached to a metal ring.
"Found it!!" I shouted, not even fully up.
Well my Achilles heel was pretty helpful now, wasn't it? Falling for no apparent reason has brought me luck today.
"Hey guys, Ariel's found the vineyard." Josh spread the word.
"What!? No way" Hera ran wide eyed with Gale at her tail.
"Here it is. It's the entrance. Pull it out." I said with Hera (who reached first) to my side pulling me up. Gale and Joshua pulled it up and put the loop of the thick rope on the hooked wall.
A creepy staircase with no lighting. We had to use our phones to light the way. But Gale noticed a couple of mirrors at an angle. She pointed the first mirror towards the light. And this in turn lit the way from the other mirrors. Cool. The Fergusons were resourceful.

We found a lot of wine bottles that was over 50 years old. $2,000 was the starting price for ONE bottle alone. Imagine how rich the Ferguson's would become! They could be the lords of the country side! Rich over night! And no one even knew about the bottles of liquid gold that were stored here.
But before I let my imagination go wild, I heard the rickety sound of the rope that was holding the heavy metal door. It could collapse any time.We have got to find the clue and get out of here. We searched for a full hour,no more no less, till we collapsed from hunger.
"I'm hungry. What about you guys?" Joshua asked. Sweating like a pig ( though pigs don't sweat) because of the suffocating enclosed space.
"Me too." I said. Hera nodded took Gale's hand and walked out the rickety door. I think she had to go to the loo like 20 minutes ago. Poor girl.
But just before Joshua and I reached the last step of the stair case, the door did what I expected it to do. It slammed right in front of our faces. I took a step back in shock and Joshua caught me. I would have been drastically injured from tumbling down the stairs just like Jack who broke his crown to fetch a pail of water. You get what I mean.
Now all I could see was pitch black. And all I felt was Joshua's embrace and his breath on my neck.
