Ariel Nesbitt is back! And this time, she's having problems that don't just pertain to her EX-boyfriend, Joshua. She's got a problem that even Nancy Drew might be troubled by. And this time, the gang- Ariel, Hera and Joshua are doing something they don't want to do- have to work together. And does Hera find someone she likes during this journey? Why don't you read and find out what happens in the gangs freaky life (again)?
One Shot
Ariel's back, but not the way you expected of her. She's turned girly and popular. But this doesn't allow her to be happy. She's broken up with Joshua, her first love (and still her only love) for reasons she won't explain. The story starts off with the beautiful winter morning in the snow covered park. Ariel sees Joshua drinking coffee in the park bench. While she's waiting for her date. She's had 7 dates in the past 2 weeks and none of them had made her forget about Josh. His walk, his talk, his touch and most importantly - his kiss. And that's why she had to break it off with Nathaniel after the date. He deserved someone who wasn't looking for a way to forget her ex.
Once she was back at home, she got a call from her best bud - Hera. And it seems like Hera's got news that can shake the floor that they stand on. In a photograph Hera handed to Ariel , two women with children stood and both were obvious sisters. The one could be Ariel's mom.... Nah couldn't be. Or can it? Anyway, the sister that resembled Ariel's mom died.
But obviously her mom's alive, that's why Hera isn't sure about the whole thing. Hera tells Ariel,“We are leaving to my grammie’s farm tomorrow. It’s where all this started. The only place to look for the answers is at its source.” And Hera had prepared all the boring details like creating transport, lodging and most importantly, telling Ariel's parents. They would be going away for Easter week and Ariel's family would join them on the actual day. So they've got a week to find out the proof.
But Ariel destroys Hera's plans by saying she will not be coming if Joshua is... which he definitely is. And so Hera uses her amazing powers of convincing, and gets Ariel to come in four sentences, “Your mom might be my mom’s long lost sister. Do you know how bizarre that sounds? And you could actually be my cousin. We could be actual sisters!” Ariel hates that she uses the 'family' card on her, but reluctantly agrees. They reached Tennessee at 7:30 in the evening. Tennessee is so beautiful to a girl (Ariel) who hasn’t experienced nature. Especially when her home is a giant metropolitan city filled with giant buildings.
Ariel describes her calming surroundings and its tranquility. They reached a very homely and clean house with a huge porch. Ariel suspected the house to have at least 10 rooms, but knowing that it still wouldn't be enough for all the Ferguson's. And Ariel noticed that it was too quiet for a house filled with 30 people. She is informed that a 'ritual' is going on. One where all the member’s of the Ferguson family who have not died from old age are remembered and prayed for. The center of the hall was filled with roses, and pictures of middle aged people, children and even the ultrasounds of babies inside the womb. It was pitiful, truly it was.
Ariel finds Nana. The oldest member of the Ferguson family is diseased with anterograde amnesia. In normal people talk, it means, she doesn’t remember anything after the accident, but she clearly remembers the things before the accident. And when she hugs Ariel she starts screaming ,"June!! June!!" After that awkward afternoon, Hera and Ariel spend their time in their room.
Now Ariel meets a new character named Gale, a masc.uline farm girl. She is dumb (she can't can't speak) and has to use her hands to talk. But she could beat Albert Einstein with her brain. And so, after many embarrassing moments with Ariel they find a Diary and code within the words of the last pages of the diary. This leads them to three clues:-
1) GO TO THE STABLE. FIND KYRA.
2) VINEYARD: 112
3) MY DAUGHTER.
In between all their investigation, Gale reveals that she is GUY!! And Hera has fallen head over heels in love with him.
Eventually they find every clue and finally end up in Pegram. The living place of Esther, June's baby cousin. She is now married and the owner of an inn. The four of them find a whole history that makes us respect June's effort for moving on with her life even when nothing worked out her way. They find that June left Pegram at the age of 26, leaving Esther with her true love. But she didn't go to the Ferguson house, then where did she go? The clues are all over and there is nothing more you can do. Will the gang give up?
No , Ariel has a scary encounter with the delusional Nana, and soon finds out that June indeed is her mother. And she did come to the Ferguson house one night. But one of the member's have a fight claiming that she killed his daughter, Esther.
The upcoming Easter day was a joyous one of celebration of finding what was lost. June got Esther and the Ferguson's got their two lost family members. All was well and there was a party held in honor of their return and Easter day. Hera was escorted by Gale but what about Ariel? Joshua wasn't seen anywhere.
But in the attached storage room, Ariel eavesdrops on Joshua and his mother. She soon hears that Joshua really does love her but they are related, and so it is not possible for him to love her that way. But his mothers says that he was born to her first husband, and when he died, she married Mr. Ferguson. She wanted to remove the confusion of who was his real father and so changed his name when he was still a small child. Therefore, she concluded, that he wasn't related to the Ferguson's by blood and could indeed have a relationship with Ariel.
Joshua confronts Ariel and they kiss. They dance and later that evening, Ariel says to Abigail that she's going to tell her what all happ.ened when she turns 16. She promises to tell her everything that happ.ened in the story. Including Esther, her mom being a lost member of the Ferguson family and how they both get uncles, aunties, cousins and grandparents. She is going to tell how incredible her investigator sister was.

“I’m sorry Ariel, but we’re done.”
That was the last I’ve heard of Joshua. He spoke these words to me at the beginning of the winter holidays. Last Month. It was my first Christmas that I didn’t feel any sort of happiness. He has left me cold and untouchable. A frozen statue to be exact. Last year was one of the best I’ve had because of him and his cousin Hera. Fortunately Hera had the good sense to let me be. She was always good at knowing what I want, but more importantly what I need. She knew she only had to interfere if I asked of it.
Now here I am, staring at Joshua drinking coffee in the park bench. He looked well as always but his heart has hardened. It shines through his face. The cold doesn’t bother me, because the anger inside of me heats my full body. I then notice him looking at me. And we just stare at each other. I can see that he can see the change in me. I am no longer the girl I used to be. I have let my hair grow till my hip and I have decorated it with ribbons and bows. My complexion has improved to give me a natural blush. I’ve turned girly. I’ve started throwing away all my jerseys and sneakers only to replace them with frocks, skirts and girly tops. And this in turn has led me to be popular with the guys.
Joshua starts to smile and come towards me. And I glare at him, but that still doesn’t make him stop from trudging on the snow towards me. But I’ll tell you what did.

“Hello Ariel, ready for our date?”
Nathaniel asked. He didn’t see the poor Joshua coming my way. Thank goodness. The gentleman is holding our coffee and our bags of croissants. “Hey, Nat.”, I say in the most cheerful tone I can conjure. It’s not that I don’t like him, it’s just that I have never been able to get over Joshua. And it was the ugly truth.
“Got what you wanted.”, he gave me an adorable smile while pushing forward the bag of freshly baked goodies. I tried to be anything but myself by saying, “Yes, now that your here” and gave him a small kiss and a long hug. And saw what I wanted. Joshua’s grief stricken back walking away without a second glance.
Revenge is a dish best served cold. And so we had a wonderful date and he asked me if we could have another amazing date together but all I said was I had a busy schedule in the coming months, so we said our goodbyes. However disappointed he was. But all I could think of was Joshua. And I had no right to string along such a good guy as Nat. He deserved better. I had 7 dates in the past 2 weeks and none of them had made me forget about Josh. His walk, his talk, his touch and most importantly - his kiss.
Nathan had been sweet enough to drop me home. And so there I was, sitting in my room, thinking about my life. Of where it went wrong. My problem with Joshua was affecting everything. He had to be the biggest problem I’ve ever faced. But soon did I know, that I was soo wrong.

“Honey, there’s a phone call for you from Hera.”
I heard my mom shouting out from the living room. I slam open my room’s door and run downstairs. I have been craving for a call like this. It’s been exactly 1hour and 25 minutes since our last conversation. Not that I’ve been keeping track. I grab the phone from my mother, because I heard something boil over. My mother ran, giving me the privacy I needed. I took hold of my darling younger sister, Abigail Benita Nesbitt and started our conversation.
“’Sup?”, I ask Hera while rocking the baby.
“’Sup? Only the most interesting news ever! I found something related to your family-”
“Well, that should be interesting”, I say sarcastically.
“-and mine.”

“What?”
I freaked out. This had to be important. I let go of my sister’s hand and let her slide to my mother’s arms. “Ariel… Ariel… are you there? Helloo… earth to Nesbitt…”, she said into the phone.
“Yeah I’m here,” I unfroze.
“Yeah, well I’m in front of your house so could you open it?”
I ran like my life depended on it. And as Hera said, there she was.
“Hi, birdbrain,” Hera came in without asking and grabbed my arm and locked the door of my room. We sat on the bed and stared at each other in a worried look.
“I lied,” Hera said. “What!?” I fell back on my pillow.
“Only half way. I just don’t have proof yunno. It’s all just theory.” Hera said in all seriousness.
I took the lotus position and control my breathing. Forget about Joshua for a second. Okay I can’t but this will have to do. “Well tell me sensei.” I said.
“During the Christmas party at my grandma’s place, I got hold of a couple of photos.” Hera searched her bag for the photos and handed them over to me.
There were two pretty middle aged sisters in dresses and holding their cute baby daughter’s in their arms leaning against a wall. One of them looked a lot like my mother. Just saying. But it couldn’t be. The Nesbitts have always lived a solitary life. I have no cousins (not that I needed any), no grandpa’s or grandma’s, no uncles or aunties. We were always alone. Sometimes I wished I had been related to Hera’s family. They’ve always gathered together at special occasions and had amazing parties. Not that Hera’s been grateful. You only know the love you have for something when it’s gone.
“So?” I asked.
“The one on the left is my mom. But who’s on the right?”
My eyes ope.ned wide. She knew what I was thinking. I said, “Could it be?”
“But it’s just theory. I asked my mom about it but she didn’t say a word. So I went to my grammie and she said that she was my mom’s sister who died at a tender age of 18. There was a huge flood in the estate and only she and her family didn’t survive. No bodies, no nothing.”

Hera rolled her eyes. Yes I was dumb but she seemed more angry at me now than before. I have got to agree I’ve never been so complex before. Hera could figure everything about me in one glance. But now all she sees is make-up. I’m pretty sure she knows that it’s all just a mask from hiding my feelings from Joshua. And partly revenge.
The last thing she expected of me was to go GIRLY. She’s always hated that I’ve worn- jersey, jeans and sneakers. Which I had like 3 pairs of now, since I threw away the rest for some space for the girly outfits. But I think she prefers anything and I mean absolutely ANYTHING from the overly-popular-good-girl look. But I needed to show Joshua that I was worth dating. But why can’t I forget anything about him?
“But what about the bodies?” I said, trying to sound smarter.
“Ummm, I can’t concentrate because of your SMELL.” Hera held her nose.
“Smell? Whadya mean? I mean, What-do-you-mean?” I’ve been improving my speech too.
“Oh boy!”, she rolled her eyes. “The perfume. Go take a bath. And get into your old clothes otherwise I’m not saying another word to you.” She threatened to take away the photos. And probably her friendship.
I reluctantly agreed, how much ever I would have liked to say ‘no way’. Truth be told I hated the ‘Smell’ too.

"Why am I doing this to myself?"
Losing my mind on a tiny error,
I nearly left the real me on the shelf.⊰
After that refreshing bath and the familiarity of my faded jeans and jersey on my skin I almost felt like giving up the act and be myself. Then I thought of the jealousy on Joshua’s face. I couldn’t give up, not now, now that I’ve come so far. But I had to say, there was nothing better than my real clothes on the real me. My face was devoid of make up and I put on some mascara (the only thing I wore back then) and went out to Hera. I wanted to say thank you but my ego wouldn’t let me.
“Okay now that you’re back, here’s what I think we should do.”, Hera said without even raising her eyes to look at me. She just concentrated on the photos.
“Alright, what should we do?” I said about to take one out of thousand ancient photographs spread out on my bed. She slapped my hand and I withdrew with a yelp. “Whadya do that for?” I whined. There goes my language. She ignored me and said,
“We are leaving to my grammie’s farm tomorrow. It’s where all this started. The only place to look for the answers is at its source.”
“But-”
“I talked to your mother and she said okay.”
“What did you-”
“No I didn’t say - ‘ Hey Mrs Nesbitt! I’m going to find out if you are my long lost aunt who died in a flood’ - Duh! I just said that my parents are taking me to the farm for the week and they agreed to get one of my friends to join. And I pick you.”
“Oh, but-”
“Yes they really are taking us there. Easter is coming soon and the whole family is going to be there.”
“But, my mom would never agree.”
“But of course I invited your whole family to join us on Easter. Your mom wouldn’t allow spending Easter without you.”
“Okay then. Is there any dress code to follow?”
“Just get dressed up for the actual day, until then you can wear whatever you want. And it will be a bit crowded so be careful of losing sight of me. And it will probably be warm.” and then muttered, "Considering we have cows..."
I frowned and ignored whatever I just heard. I asked a question that was more important than any other. “And umm, what about… your cousin? Is he coming too?” I knew this would strike a nerve but it had to be asked.
“Yes. Joshua will be coming too.” She replied in a melancholy tone.

“Then I’m not coming.”
“Oh yes you are!” Hera said, even though she expected me to say this. “I worked my bu.tt off on this mission.”
“Not my problem.” I said too calmly. I could actually see white hair forming on Hera’s hair. She’s been freaking out for a while now.
“Yes it is! Your mom might be my mom’s long lost sister. Do you know how bizarre that sounds? And you could actually be my cousin. We could be actual sisters!”
I didn’t have the guts to fight this one. But more than ever my heart went out to her and thought of finding more cousins, uncles, aunts, grammie’s and granpa’s, which eventually got me excited.
I smiled and reached out to Hera and hugged her. “Please remember even if we discover we aren’t really sisters, I still consider you the closest thing I have to a sister… Other than Abigail.” I laughed in her ears.
Well, it brought us to tears. I was leaving with her and she knew it.
“But what about Joshua?” Hera asked between the tears.
“I’ll deal with him later. I won’t ignore him but we’ll never be the same again.”
We reached Tennessee at 7:30 in the evening. And like Hera said, my mom had agreed to let me go with her family to the beautiful farm state and had helped me pack my bag.
“So mom, do you by any possibility have …….. blood relatives?” I tried to get some clues.
“Why do you ask?” my mom raised her eyebrows.
“Oh nothing. I just found it funny that I am the only person in my class who doesn’t have a cousin to spend the summer with.”
“Well, I did have a family once, but unfortunately they’ve forgotten about me.”
Silence.
“I’m sorry Ma.”
“It’s alright darling. It was long time ago anyway.”
Awkward silence.
“So, are there any BOYS on this trip, Ariel?” my mom asked while I buried my head in my almirah.
“Yes, Joshua is coming.” I said in a neutral voice. At least I tried to.
There was a sharp intake of air by my mother. “You mean you’re ex who you ended with badly?”
“You got it.” I tried to smile.
“Well, I guess you won’t be needing the TALK. But just in case-”
“Oh mom. The only talk I need is about what I should wear for Easter.”
“It’s alright if you wanna talk about it.”
“No mom, I don’t want to talk about it.”
And that was the end of it. Tennessee here I come!

Fair fight, knocked down, then I got over you
Can't fight no more, you knock me out, what am I supposed to do?⊰
“Then I’m not coming.”
“Oh yes you are!” Hera said, even though she expected me to say this. “I worked my bu.tt off on this mission.”
“Not my problem.” I said too calmly. I could actually see white hair forming on Hera’s hair. She’s been freaking out for a while now.

To find my way back to Tennessee
I'm going home now to southern, it's so sweet
And find my way back to Tennessee⊰
Tennessee is so beautiful to a girl who hasn’t experienced nature. Especially when her home is a giant metropolitan city filled with giant buildings. The closest thing I’ve seen to greenery is the potted plant on my window sill. Tennessee wasn’t much but it was enough for me to let my jaw drop. It made you feel relaxed you know. The beautiful country side will make you feel like it was most peaceful place on the earth. There is nothing but grasslands at every corner of your eye and fields that look like they do not end. Horses seem to be walking lazily near the fence and if it weren’t for my fear of heights, I would have climbed right on up and seen the field with a whole new perspective. A horse’s perspective, I mean. No one talked in the car and everyone was looking out the car window. It seems like even the Ferguson’s were not used to such a beautiful sight.
We reached a very homely and clean house with a huge porch. I suspected the house to have atleast 10 rooms, considering how big it was. But then I thought of the number of Ferguson’s residing in there. It wouldn’t nearly be enough for the joint family. But why didn’t I hear any noise from inside?
We were escorted by Uncle Marvin (that’s what everyone calls him so I didn’t find any reason why I shouldn’t either.) and he said in a bass tone, “Everyone’s already inside and their going through the ‘ritual’. You know the routine.”
The room was filled with sadness and remorse. And at the corner of the room was Joshua with his sister. The center of the hall was filled with roses, and pictures of middle aged people, children and even the ultrasounds of babies inside the womb.
“Ritual?” I asked Hera in hushed tones.
“It’s for all the member’s of the Ferguson family who’s left us early. Like Uncle Marvin’s two unborn babies for instance, and Aunt June… You’re mom.”
I knew just putting garlands around the pictures would have been emotional for the Ferguson's. I saw tears forming in Uncle Marvin’s eyes and his wife was clinging to him closely. It was pitiful, it truly was.
