Ruby Mongelli is a social activist and Haylee's guardian. She's always out at some sort of rally, parade, or meeting, but when she is free, she enjoys spending time painting and shopping with Haylee. She has a firm head on her shoulders, but still is young for taking care of someone, being only 23, so she isn't a 5 star guardian, but tries her hardest.

Prologue

There's a point in your life where you feel invisible. You feel drowned out of everything, left out, alienated. Nobody seems to notice your presence, your just, there. It's the most awful feeling in the world. I would know, I've felt like this almost all my life.

Now you, dear reader, an introduction. I'm Haylee, Haylee Shasra Mongelli if you want the whole thing. I'm the background character in the screenplay of everyone's lives, even my own sometimes. The person who gets a line or two, but other than that, is just there to make the setting look a bit more realistic, the person who lets the audience know that the population of the school or town doesn't just consist of the main cast.

Let's give you a little bit more backstory, just to clear things up. I'm bisexual. Crazy, right? You would think that when you saw my parents' reaction when I came out. I guess it didn't fit into their little box of perfection.

By box of perfection I mean my twin sister. I completely hate her. Shaylee Ellen Mongelli. Straight A student, loved by all, volunteer, saves people from falling into the depths of hell. Okay, I was exaggerating that last part, but she's a Mary-Sue! Completely perfect! By everything that is good and holy do I hate it! I'm dull compared to her. She's mother's and father's little angel, and I'm the spawn of Satan.

Add highly religious parents, and you've got a hell storm for me. So much so that I got kicked out of the house when I came out. Parents fumed at me night of, sent me packing to live with my aunt day after.

So there's the family problems there, but at school I kind of put it on myself. I'm the girl who always listens to you, and then pretends to not be offended when you turn to someone else when you're done and not listen to me. I'm the girl who is always smiling, always laughing and joking around, even when no one is listening. I have one good friend, and is then ignored by everyone else.

Well I was pretty much done with that. Done with being ignored, done with being the background character. I went on a journey, if you can call it that, to be noticed. To become part of a main cast, if not at least a supporting role. This book you are reading right now, my dear reader, is the story of that journey. You can put it down, if you so desire, or continue on. I don't care about your choice, really. A story like this had to be written down.

Chapter 1

There's nowhere I feel more invisible than the bus ride home from school. Everyone is laughing and joking around, trying to get everyone else in. Everyone else except for me. My head lays on the window, golden blonde hair matted against the glass. Green eyes staring out the window to watch the same suburban landscape scroll by. Even if I attempted to interject something in, it would just get blown over by the endless chatter.

As the bus finally decides to end my misery by approaching to a halt at my stop, I sling my shoulder strap bookbag over my, well, shoulder, and walk off the bus without muttering a word of farewell to anyone.

I swing the door to the simple house I now live in to see my Aunt Ruby sitting in the living area, watching the channel 9 news. The TV is going off about the war on whatever it may be, and the rights act of the week. She was brushing her short, ginger hair. Ginger isn't her natural color, buit she looks pretty with it regardless.

"I'm home Aunt Ruby." I say as I peak my head through the door.

She turns around and greets me with a smile. "Haylee!" She cheers my name as she gets up from the couch and drowns me in a hug. I smile brightly as she almost tackles me. I'm always happier with Aunt Ruby, maybe because she treats me like I'm worth something. To me, that's a massive boost in self esteem. Once letting go, she asked what any respectable guardian would say "How was your day?"

Instead of saying "Fine" like most kids , as that's far to mainstream and boring, I share a joke with Aunt Ruby.

"Still didn't get the lead role today." I say as I throw my 6 dollar backpack on the couch. If you didn't notice from all my theater references, I love acting. I'm the person who will watch Wicked and Annie day after day recorded, and longs for Broadway. Maybe one day I'll join the actors on stage and make it big.

"Well, directors always have favorites." Aunt Ruby replied to me, pushing my backpack against the throw pillows. "Any homework?"

"The heavens graced me today, there is none." I said, throwing my hands in the air like I was in the Hallejuah choir.

Aunt Ruby chuckled before glancing at her watch. "I'm leaving for the town meeting in 5 minutes, you okay with being home alone for 2 hours?" She asked me as she slung her purse over her shoulder. I shook my head. This stuff happened all the time, my aunt being the biggest social activist the world has ever seen. I have learned so many things about people from when she talks about her rallies. Did you know that there are people who think they are animals, supernatural creatures, and even Celestial bodies in the wrong bodies? They are called otherkin, and I want to meet one. They sound pretty cool. Ah, the things I learn from my aunt.

Aunt Ruby jolted out the door soon after, leaving me all alone, or so I thought. I was about to zone out on the couch when I heard a violent knocking on my door.

"Hey my bæ! Open the door!" The voice was muffled from the door being in the way, but I knew who it was. Natski. Oh goodness Natski.

"I'm here too!" Another voice went through my door, this time masculine. Ranaldo, or Ray, as I call him.

I slowly opened my door before a little ball of unused energy ran under me, almost causing me to fall.

That energy was attached to a short girl with shoulder length vibrant blue hair and thin-rimmed glasses, Natski. She had crashed on my couch, her face situated in a floral-printed throw pillow, her glasses flung to the back of her head, as if her hair had eyes that needed to see.

Next in the door was a thin Hispanic young man with black peach fuzz under his nose. His coarse black hair was brushed to one side, this was Ray. He pulled Natski out of my throw pillow, where then Natski moved her glasses to where they should be.

"Wassup, Drama Geek?" Natski asked, getting up in my face. Natski was a Japanese-American girl, who insists blue is her natural hair color, but Ray and I knew her before she dyed it.

"Nothing much, what about you, Otaku?" I replied, pushing my friend away a bit, allowing me to have some personal space.

"I am a woman on a mission. Tell Drama Geek the plan, Tortilla Ninja." Natski looked over at Ray. She had given us each codenames, well, Ray made up his own, but still. I don't know why she does it.

Ray cleared his throat. "We are formally inviting you to a divine evening at Ricky's Diner, all expenses paid by Lady Natski Ojama." he tried his best at impersonating a British butler, and was actually pretty good. I couldn't help but laugh at his act, however.

Natski had a huge, goofy smile on her face. "You in, Drama Geek?" She asked.

I put my hand to my chin, stroking it like I was contemplating something complex and philosophical. "If all expenses are paid, then I will join you...." I too, was faking a British accent.

"Alright!" Natski chirped, grabbing my wrist. "Let's get on it then!" Without giving me time to reply, the short Asian American girl was dragging me out of the door of my own house and through the streets of Liberty Hills. Ray had to catch up with us, the poor fellow.

Ricky's Diner was a 10 minute stroll from my house, and it was the main hangout for the teenage population of the town. The diner's owner, Richard Powalski, makes classic malt milkshakes using those retro milkshake machines. Heck, the entire place was a flashback from the 60s. Natski, Ray, and I would go there any time we felt like it, which was often.

As we walked through the doors, Richard waved hello to us as we took our seats at our favorite booth. The red leather cushioned me as I almost jumped into my seat. Over at the counter, was the cheer team, fresh out of practice.

I glanced over at the cheerleaders and sighed. There was at least 10 of them, a group of friends that always has each other's back and was adored by everyone. I wanted to be like that. Have a group of people that were my true friends, but everyone noticed and was friendly with. I had the former, but the opposite of the latter. Outside of Aunt Ruby, Natski, and Ray, I was just, there. People would ask me for a pencil or occasionally ask me for homework answers, but outside that, most people didn't notice me. I probably sound like an attention hog, but doesn't everyone want to be liked?

"Hey! Earth to Drama Geek!" Natski's voice broke my train of thought. I looked over at her to see what she needed. "Whatcha thinking about over in Lala land?"

I bit my lip, but proceeded to answer. "I just was thinking about the cheerleaders, and how everyone likes them. I just was thinking about how I wanted to be that way."

Natski glanced over at Ray, and they exchanged devious smiles. They have some sort of telepathy, and from the looks on their faces, they were plotting something.

"Haylee Mongelli!" Natski almost shouted my name and slammed her fist into the table. "Tortilla Ninja and I have decided that our main goal as of now will be to get you noticed!"

"And we know exactly how to do it!" Ray added, before looking over at the milkshake machine. "But first, milkshakes!"

I gulped. Ray and Natski had a plan, and a plan involving me. Wherever they were planning to head with this, it wasn't going to end without something bizzare happening. I guess this is what I signed up for when becoming their friend. Let's just hope I get out of this without being completely humiliated.

Chapter 2

 "Here's the plan!"

When I hear the words leave Natski's mouth, I know it's the beginning of the end of my dignity, sanity, my dwindling reputation,  or all of the above. It all depends, really.

"We are going to make Haylee the most adorble girl Liberty Hills has EVA seen.  We will make sure people WORSHIP her as the queen of kawaii. Do we have our premise clear?" Natski said, going all charismatic on us, as if she were a presidential candidate.

I raised my hand, I guess a bit out of habit.  "Um, Natski, I just want to be noticed by people." I said, a little nervous of where she was going with this.

The waitress came by our table with menus, interrupting our little meeting. "Can I get you all something to drink?" She asked us with a smile.

"Milkshake.  Cookies and cream, if you will." Natski said, still in what we call her 'battle mode'. Her various exaterrated expressions was what made her so cute and lovable. I wonder if I had a quirk that made Ray and Natski enjoy my company so much. It's the little things that make me think.

"I'll have a sprite, please" Ray said, all cool and chill. If there was a sanity spectrum for the population of the entire town, Natski would be on the complete bonkers side, while Ray is the coolest cat in town. Did I really just say that. I guess I'm closer to the cuckoo side of the sanity scale as well.

"A water, if you could." I'm a simple person with simple needs, I guess . Bland.  Ah, well.

Once the waitress left to fetch our drinks, whistling tunes from The Sound of Music as she did so. Natski  took no time in getting back on task.
"We need to get Haylee INVOLVED in s***. Tortilla Ninja!  What are the current clubs and events that'll Intrest drama geek over here?" The short girl pointed to Ray,  who shortly delivered an answer that could answer my prayers.

"The School's musical is holding auditons soon. It's going to be Alice in Wonderland" Hearing that was like a choir of angels singing gospels in my ears. Alice in Wonderland? I was born to be Alice.  And if I nail the lead role, everyone will be praising me for my great work! It's the master plan!

I slammed my hand on the table, palm down. "I'm in!" I shouted nearly at the top of my lungs, directing stares from all corners of the diner.

Ray looked at me and smiled. "Your getting the hang of it already...." he chuckled. I sank under the table, face red with embarrassment.  Ray and Natski burst out into laughter,  only drawing more stares and only to make my face grow deeper in its embarrassed red hue.

In short,  the evening at Ricky's was an eventful and tiring one. When I got home,  Aunt Ruby was already asleep, leaving me a note saying to leave her a note when leaving the house. Crumpling up the paper and tossing it in the wastebasket,  I walked to my room and flopped onto my bed. I quickly got changed into a nightgown and crawled into bed. Do re mi and Favorite Things played on repeat in my head as I slowly drifted into sleep,

I dreamt of being popular,  having boys and girls alike fall head over heels for me and swoon in the halls, and me, standing on the school stage, dressed as Alice,  playing me part like a pro. My impossible fantasies were interrupted by a beeping alarm clock. Frustrated and discontent, I slammed my fist onto the snooze button and sat up in my bed, golden hair falling over my eyes in grade A bedhead, almost blocking my vision, but not quite. However, I had to get out of this morning funk. According to what Ray had said, the play's audition sign ups were today, so I had to show up early so I could get first auditon, and therefore first shot at Alice or any other characters.

Jumping out of bed, I quickly slipped on an ice blue sweater dress and royal blue leggings with flats to match,  and started brushing my hair on my way to the bathroom. After finishing my ho-hum morning routine,  I knocked on Aunt Ruby's bedroom door to signal my departure,  and made my way to the bus stop.

Natski was already there, tapping away at her PSP. You could see that she was playing Dangan ronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc from the system's reflection in her glasses. The bus arrived at our stop as I climbed on,  Natski only following when the bus driver yelled at her if she was getting on or not. This was the first time I was on a city bus, as the school bus came a half hour later. I don't know why Natski always takes the city bus, however. I found myself once again staring  out the window,  letting my mind drift to impossible fantasies.  Today was different though. Today I could feel change surge through my veins. Today was the day I made impossible fantasies possible realities. I could feel it in my gut.  And as they say, the gut's always right. Let's just hope it's true.
