A Piece of Me - Chapter One 2bu1xg

a  p i e c e  o f  m e

Meet Hannah Campbell; she's intelligent, sarcastic, stubborn, and sweet. You'd either find her carrying a new book to school everyday, eating a lot of food, or sobbing over her favorite characters in books and tv shows. Meet Kyle Tatum; he's rude, impulsive, short-tempered, and brooding. He skips school when he wants to, he doesn't care about anything, and he always gets what he wants.

And when their worlds collide, it's hate at first sight.
They can't stand one another. They're always arguing. They never agree on anything.
So why is it they can't seem to let go of one another?

A Piece of Me - Chapter One Empty Chapter One.

Mensaje  enchantedmelody Vie Mayo 16, 2014 1:44 pm

Being stuck in awkward or uncomfortable situations wasn't that all new to me. In fact, I was very familiar with the story. I had gotten used to them, but the thing is, I never knew how to deal with them. Never. I panicked way too much. I'd usually chew on my hair. It helped calm my nerves. At other times, I would rant - a lot - or go into yoda talk. My mother thought it was unhealthy, but she eventually came around and accepted the fact that her sixteen year-old daughter was unusual.

Unfortunately, I was stuck in a really unpleasant situation, and I didn't know how to get out of it.

Mrs. Mount stared at me through her round spectacles, her bony fingers interlaced, elbows propped up on the mahogany desk. She was the school's principal, and she was a firm and independent lady. I had always admired her character. She was very elegant - especially when it came to dressing up.

"Hannah, you can stop chewing your hair," She finally broke the ice. "You're not in trouble. I just want to have a little chat. That is all." She gave me an assuring smile. I slowly removed a handful of my brown (and wet) hair out of my mouth, placing my hands on top of each other on my lap. "So, what am I here for?"

Mrs. Mount only called students to her office if they were in trouble. At least that was what I thought. She was a busy woman after all. I had never gotten in trouble before. My attendance record was perfect, and I made it my goal to have it stay that way. So you could see why I was chewing on my hair. I was late to class yesterday. My alarm clock didn't go off, but the teacher didn't do anything. (I begged the teacher to give me another chance, and since I was one of her favorite students, she agreed.).

She stood up from her chair and looked out her huge window, onto the football field. Her hands were behind her back. She looked exactly like those strict principals in movies, and she really was.

She heavily sighed. "Have you, by any chance, heard of this fellow student, Kyle Tatum? I assume you do, since you both are juniors, and you both have the same classes."
Realizing she wasn't going to turn around, I decided to speak. "I have. It's just that I've never communicated with him before. We've shared glances, but that was about it. I choose to steer clear from the jocks, and cheerleaders, and populars."
Mrs. Mount turned around. "Do you know anything about him?"
I bit my lip. "He's very popular, and is admired by everybody. From the looks of it, he seems to be rude and obnoxious. I don't know, really. I'm sorry, but why do you ask?"
"Hannah, you're the most intelligent student in eleventh grade, and you know that," She spoke. "But, Kyle, well, he's not so bright. I can see why. Anyways, he's failing Chemistry to the point where he may never get the scholarship out of playing football."

I looked up, suddenly interested. "Kyle actually wants a scholarship? But the kid doesn't care about school!"

"People may surprise you," She smiled. "Kyle has had tons of tutors in the past, but he's scared them off, if you want me to put it in that way. He's intolerant, never works, and he's told me many times that he can pass on his own, but he's shown no effort or progress whatsoever."

I already knew where the conversation was going, and I didn't like it one bit.

"I'm assuming you want me to try to tutor him."

She sighed again. "Yes. Exactly. But it's his last chance - his last warning. I've had enough searching for tutors for that kid. If he doesn't take school seriously, he may likely never pass or get his scholarship. He's risking his own future. Listen, Hannah, I just want you to try. The first two days or such. I'm not forcing you, it's your choice. Think about it, and you can tell me your answer after school. Dismissed."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Oh, and, Hannah? Don't judge a book by its cover. You never know what's really inside. Give the boy a chance. You may like him. Not only do I want you to teach him how to balance equations, I want you to get to know the guy - if you choose to tutor him, that is."

"No freaking way!" Faith squealed, smacking my arm. "I can't believe you're going to be tutoring Kyle Tatum. Kyle freaking Tatum. This is like you're being proposed to in France!"

Ah, Faith. I had been attached to her hip since Kindergarten, and vice versa, of course. We were quite different, actually. She was the laid-back, cool, go-to-a-party kind of girl. Whereas I would rather spend Friday and Saturday nights watching Star Wars. She had short, black hair with pink streaks. Her eyes were piercing blue, and her skin was pale. Nevertheless, she was beautiful, and was crushed on by a lot of guys.

"Faith, I don't even know if I'm going to be tutoring him," I rubbed my arm. "Mrs. Mount told me to think about it, and I'm in a pickle. You know I don't socialize with people like him. And how are you more excited than I am? Wait. I'm not even excited!"

She rolled her eyes. "Don't be silly, Hannah. I think you should tutor him! Make all those girls jealous - all of those girls that tormented your life. Remember?" She tapped the side of her forehead, her lips pursed. I shook my head. "This isn't even about getting back at them! And they haven't tormented my life. They just like insulting people who aren't popular or rich or something."

I bit into my sandwich. I still didn't know if I wanted to tutor him. If Kyle were a nicer, more approachable, kind of guy, I wouldn't have to think about the situation. But he wasn't. This decision did not depend on my life, and I didn't know why I was putting so much thought into it.

Kyle was known for his bad boy character. He got into fights, argued with teachers, hardly paid any attention in class, and vandalized school property whenever he had the chance. He once set off the fire alarm...and there wasn't even a fire. Don't forget his famous swirlies. His friends helped him out, and freshmen were usually the target. They were fresh meat.

That was why I was putting too much thought into the situation... I would end up getting a swirly by Kyle and his gang themselves. Sighing, I rested my chin on my palm. "I need help, Faith. Should I go for it or?"
"I think you should," Faith said. "And it's not because of the girls." I laughed. "Give him a chance. He may surprise you."

I nodded slowly.

"Plus, he's really hot." I immediately flicked her between her eyes. "Okay, what the hell was that for? It's the truth! Just look at him. The guy didn't even have to go through puberty. He was as hot as he is now." She raised her hands up defensively.
I rolled my eyes at her but smiled. "You're so delusional, you know that?"
She speared a strawberry and popped it into her mouth. "And that's why you love me."

I had to agree with Faith. Kyle was attractive, and it was pretty obvious. You couldn't be popular if you weren't a) from a classy family, or b) a rude person, or c) hot. That was basically it. I was neither of them, and Kyle, well, he was all three. I had never met Kyle's parents, but I knew that they had companies all over the world selling i-don't-know-what. I think we have all established that Kyle isn't the brightest nor the friendliest guy you could ever meet. And his looks. His looks. Easy enough to say that they charmed a lot of girls in Hilton High, excluding me, of course.

My eyes landed on Kyle. He was sitting with a bunch of his friends at their usual table. They were all roaring with laughter. One of the students seated at the table near them was crying, her shoulders sagged and her face red. I felt really bad for her. I hated being in that position. Did I even want to go through that? Kyle caught my gaze, and held the lock for a brief two seconds before turning his attention back to his friends.

I raised my eyebrows and took a long sip of my water.

"I'll catch up with you later, m'kay?" I nodded at Faith and waved goodbye. We didn't have the same classes this year. Sometimes, I would just see her during lunch because of our schedules. I slung my bag over my shoulder and walked further down the hallway, my eyes focused on the book in my hands. I had just borrowed it from the Library.

I rounded the corner, and I had only taken two steps when something hit my head hard. The book fell out of my hands as I clutched my sore head. Having nothing to hold on to, I lost my balance and dropped to my knees, but someone caught me by my elbows and pulled me up. I tilted my head upwards and was met by dark blue eyes staring down at me. "Oh, sh-t." He muttered. "Sh-t, sh-t, sh-t."

Kyle Tatum.

"You're an imbecile!" I suddenly yelled. Kyle quickly let go of my elbows and backed away. "Who plays with a football in the hallway? Are you stupid or something?"
Kyle glared at me. "You're screaming at me when you were reading a book while walking? Oh, please, this is your fault! If you hadn't been reading that book of yours, you wouldn't have been hit with the ball."
"Wait, wait, wait," I raised my hands. "You're blaming me? You hit me with a ball and you have nothing to say about it? Were you raised in a barn or something? I have a sore head because of you, and it'll probably swell up and bleed."
"No, it won't," He grabbed my arm. "Come on, I'm taking you to the nurse."
"Apologize first," I firmly said as he dragged me across the hallway.
"No."

I had expected myself to be seated in the principal's office after school. I hadn't expected it to be right after lunch. But here I was, sitting on the all too familiar black chair, a bag of frozen peas pressed to the bump on my head. I wasn't the only one in the office, though. Kyle was sitting right beside me, and I could tell he was annoyed and angry. The nurse called Mrs. Mount after Kyle took me to the infirmary.

Mrs. Mount paced back and forth, her hands neatly placed behind her back. The room was silent. She continued walking up and down, but when she finally stopped, she looked right at Kyle sternly in the eyes. He stared back. Everything that was happening was causing me to become even more nervous, and I longed to see the sun and to breathe properly again.

"Do you know why you're here?" She asked, making sure her words were clear. I glanced at Kyle.
He shifted in his seat and heavily sighed. "Yes. But you can't blame me for it fully. She-" He pointed at me with his index finger. "-was reading a book while walking. We both weren't paying attention."

Mrs. Mount sat down. "You hit her by accident."
Kyle nodded. "Listen, I don't want to get in trouble or anything. Can we just wrap this up? I have football practice." She stared at him, her eyes squinted. "Very well. Apologize first."
He leaned back against his chair and clenched his fist slowly, his elbow propped up on the chair's armrest. "I'm sorry." He said through gritted teeth. I stared at him for a second then turned my head away.

"Hannah," Mrs. Mount spoke up. "Have you thought about it?"
I tensed. I could feel Kyle's eyes burning into my head. "I have."
"And?" Mrs. Mount pressed on. "Are you going to give it a shot?"

Was I? I could say no and I would be out of here. I wouldn't have to talk to Kyle or bump into him ever again and we would go on with our lives. It was a choice. I wasn't being forced to help him out. I opened my mouth to say no, to say that I didn't want to tutor Kyle, but nothing came out. I knew there was this small part of me that wanted to see what it would be like - what the other tutors felt like and why they gave up on him. I was always a curious person. I hated that about me.

"It wouldn't hurt to try, right?" I replied.
Kyle arched his eyebrows in confusion. I looked at my lap, avoiding their gazes. "What is she talking about? If this is another plan to help me, then I'm out. How many times am I going to have to tell you? I don't need a tutor!"
Mrs. Mount's face stayed expressionless. "You have no choice. You've shown no improvement, and you promised me you'll work harder. When is that, Kyle? Time flies by quickly. When are you going to start taking school seriously?" Her voice raised with each word she said, and I had to sink down in my seat.

Kyle's fist clenched even harder now. I could see his knuckles turn white from the tight grip. Imagining my head between his two hands as he strangled me made me shudder. The guy was unpredictable. Who knew what he was capable of?

"I have no choice?" Kyle hissed. "If I want to fail, I'll fail. It's none of your da-n business. You don't even care. I bet my father talked to you about this." He laughed, but it wasn't friendly. "Yeah, that's exactly it. My father talked to you. If he hadn't, you wouldn't have assigned another tutor."
"That's enough," Mrs. Mount said. I could tell she was angry, but she kept it cool and low. "Your father never talked to me. He only comes to school to pick up your report card, and that's it. I want you to study more. Unclench those fists and drop the attitude." Kyle fell silent. Mrs. Mount turned to me. "You start tomorrow. Dismissed."

Kyle was the first one to stand up. He didn't look at Mrs. Mount, but quickly shuffled out of the office. I was behind him and I was trying my best to slow my pace. He was intimidating. I was actually scared. Biting my lip, I stared at my feet as they dragged me down the hall.

"If that old bat thinks I'm going to go through this, she's wrong," Kyle snarled.
I looked up and this time, I walked faster to be on the same level as him. "You don't have much of a choice."
"I do," He said. "What are you going to do about it?"
"Her name is Mrs. Mount, between," I said, frowning. "Not old bat."
"I don't need a lecture," Kyle narrowed his eyes at me, halting in his place. "I don't need anything from you."

He continued walking, and I was left standing there, anger boiling. I wasn't going to have that. I was most definitely not going to be treated the way he treated his old tutors. That wasn't me - that wasn't how I was raised. I was raised to stand up for myself. I was not going to let Kyle run over me as if I were a piece of trash.

I stomped over to Kyle and grabbed him by the collar of his dress shirt.

"Listen here," I spat. "That's not how it's going to go. You can't do that. You can't talk to me like that. You can't talk to anybody like that, but you do, and some people don't have the courage to say anything. I'm not one of those people. You're the same as your friends. You don't appreciate anything. She was only trying to help you, and you do nothing to show her that you're thankful. I was given an assignment. I have to help you in Chemistry. And that's exactly what I'm going to do, whether you like or not." I jabbed him in the chest with my finger. "So grow up, Kyle. We start tomorrow."

I fixed the strap of my bag and walked away from him. Once he was out of sight, I leaned against the brick wall and took subtle breaths. I had never been this angry at someone. I had never blown up like that. Why did I have to grab him and yell? He was bound to do something. I didn't even think he was going to study tomorrow. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply. I pictured my parents' proud faces and it made me feel much better.

As I walked to my next class, I spotted Mrs. Mount leaning against the doorway, a huge smile spread across her face. She heard. She winked at me then disappeared into her office. Smiling, I made my way to Advanced Math. And that smile never left my lips.

Well, you had to deal with me repeating stories and deleting topics, so you can freely rewrite the story, and I'll definitely support you no matter what.
I'll probably update next week. I finished my entrance exams, even if I do have upcoming tests in school, but I'll be able to write. (:
